Biotechnology offers an opportunity to tap into the bright colours of biology to produce more sustainable, yet equally vibrant, colours. While artificial dyes are visually appealing and cheap to manufacture, many have been banned due to health concerns. Today’s natural colours are primarily sourced from plant extracts but are c. 10x more expensive than synthetics, low quality, difficult to formulate and require significant land use. Phytolon has developed a proprietary process for producing natural colours through precision fermentation of baker’s yeast.
